What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comment forms, as well as the visitor’s IP address and the user’s browser string to help us detect spam.
An anonymized string (also called a hash), created from your email address, may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you use it. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public next to your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the site, you should avoid uploading images that have embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the website can download and extract all location data from images on the website.
Contact forms
The data entered in the contact form fields (name and e-mail address) are necessary to reply to incoming e-mails.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site, you can opt to have your name, email address and website saved in cookies. These are for your convenience, so you don’t have to fill them in again when you leave another comment. These cookies will be valid for one year.
If you have an account and log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set some cookies to save your login information and screen display options. The login cookies are kept for two days and the display options cookies are kept for one year. If you select “Remember me”, your login cookies will be stored for two weeks. If you log out of your account, your login cookies will be deleted.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie does not include personal data and simply indicates the ID of the article you have just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Content embedded from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly the same as if visitors viewed another website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, incorporate additional third party tracking and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged into that website.
How long we keep your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept for an indefinite period of time. This way we can automatically recognise and approve all subsequent comments instead of keeping them in a queue for moderation.
For users (if any) who register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can view, edit or delete their personal information at any time (but cannot change their username). Website administrators can also view and edit this information.
What rights do you have over your data
If you have an account or have left comments on this website, you can request to receive an export file with the personal data we hold about you, including all the data you have provided to us. You can also ask us to delete any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data that we are required to keep for administrative, legal or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked by an automated spam detection service.
